What size rug do I need for my living room?
As a rule, the rug should sit under at least the front legs of all the main seating, leaving roughly 30-45 cm (12-18 in) of floor around its edges. For most living rooms that means an 8x10 ft or 9x12 ft rug. This calculator recommends a size from your room dimensions and shows it to scale under your furniture.
Should furniture sit on or off the rug?
In living rooms, at least the front legs of each seat should rest on the rug to anchor the space. In dining rooms, the rug should extend about 60 cm (24 in) beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on it when pulled out. The calculator accounts for both.
